Deepak and Poonam emerged as the only Indian victors in a challenging opening day at the Boxing World Cup (Stage 2) held in China, advancing to the next round while seven others faced setbacks, according to official reports.

In an impressive bout, Poonam forged ahead in the women's 54kg division by securing a commanding 5-0 win over Uzbekistan's Aziza Yokubova. Deepak mirrored her success in the men's 70kg category, outclassing Turkmenistan's Bayramdurdy Nurmuhammedov with another unanimous 5-0 verdict.

Unfortunately, other Indian contenders faltered; Rishi Singh lost to Azerbaijan's Subhan Mamedov, Sanamacha Chanu Thokchom faced defeat by Canada's Tammara Thibeault, while others, like Anmol and Harsh Choudhary, also exited early. Despite quarterfinal challenges, Deepak and Poonam remain crucial for India's prospects in the tournament's continuation.
