In a thrilling World Cup opener on Monday at Los Angeles' SoFi Stadium, Iran and New Zealand clashed to a 2-2 draw amidst protests by Iranian fans against the Tehran government. The encounter began with New Zealand's early advantage as striker Elijah Just found the net in the seventh minute with a volley set up by captain Chris Wood.

Iran responded decisively in the 32nd minute when Ramin Rezaeian scored, igniting celebrations among the largely pro-Iranian audience. New Zealand regained their lead in the 54th minute with Just's second goal, assisted once more by Wood, as he skillfully lobbed the ball over Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand.

However, Iran's resilience shone through 10 minutes later, with Mohammad Mohebbi glancing a header in at the back post to secure the equalizer. Iran now prepares to face Belgium in Los Angeles, while New Zealand will take on Egypt in Vancouver this Sunday. The match also saw Iran supporters defy FIFA by displaying the pre-revolutionary flag inside the stadium.
