Indian Arrows stun Mohun Bagan 3-1 in I-League
Indian Arrows drew curtains to their Hero I-League campaign on a memorable note by stunning heavyweights Mohun Bagan with a come-from-behind 3-1 away win at the Saltlake Stadium here Thursday. Former India midfielder Mehtab Hossain wore the captain's arm band in his swansong match as Bagan began in the right earnest with Azharuddin Mallick giving a 17th minute lead.
It was Sony Norde who set it up with a low cross inside the penalty box and Azharuddin made no mistake in finding the back of the net. But their joy was short-lived as the AIFF developmental outfit bounced back to score through Abhijit Sarkar (28th), Rahul KP (74th) before substitute Rohit Danu put the icing on the cake with his stoppage time goal.
Indian Arrows finished their campaign with 21 points from 20 matches including six wins, while it was a heartbreak for Mohun Bagan having lost in their final home outing. Mohun Bagan currently have 26 points from 19 games and will travel to Shillong for their last league match.
Khalid Jameel rung in seven changes from their 1-3 loss against Chennai City FC as the hosts drew first blood through Mallick. But Bagan's defence looked in complete disarray thereafter.
Taking advantage advantage of a follow up given away by Bagan keeper Ricardo Cardozo from a freekick, Sarkar equalised and turned the game in Indian Arrows' favour. Rahul then intercepted a ball to snatch the lead for the visitors in the second half.
Bagan had their share of chances and came close in the 67th minute when Kisseka missed the target with an atrocious header. Replacing Rahul in the 90th minute, Danu slotted into an empty net with Cardozo out of place to hand Arrows a stunning win.
