Milwaukee Brewers reliever Bobby Wahl will likely miss the entire 2019 season with a torn ACL in his right knee, the team announced Sunday. The hard-throwing right-hander suffered the injury during Friday's spring training game against the Seattle Mariners. He limped off the field after giving up a sacrifice fly to Mitch Haniger and later underwent an MRI.
Brewers general manager David Stearns confirmed the severity of the injury on Sunday and said Wahl will seek a second opinion. Wahl, who turns 27 later this month, pitched for the Oakland Athletics in 2017 and the New York Mets in 2018. In 14 career major league games, he has a 6.92 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 13 innings.
Ranked as Milwaukee's 26th-best prospect by MLB.com, Wahl struck out 73 batters in 45 innings and posted a 2.20 ERA last season in Triple-A. The Brewers acquired him on Jan. 5 along with right-hander Adam Hill and infielder Felix Valerio in the trade that sent outfielder Keon Broxton to the Mets.
