San Diego Padres manager Andy Green told reporters Tuesday that outfielder Travis Jankowski will undergo surgery this week for a broken wrist and will miss multiple months. "Travis Jankowski broke his wrist," Green said from the team's spring training facility in Peoria, Ariz. "The scaphoid bone is broken. He's seeing a specialist this morning. The anticipation is there will be a surgery that follows in the next few days. We'll get that taken care of as quickly as possible. But it is a three-month type recovery for the type of break he had. It's not a 'back here in a few weeks thing.' He did it pretty severely."
Jankowski, 27, was injured while diving for a ball on Sunday. The team confirmed the severity of his injury the following day. "He definitely brings some special ingredients," Green told reporters Monday. "Speed, the ability to defend -- those are really strong attributes to him. We don't have anybody who is really the same level as him in that regard."
Jankowski hit .259 with four home runs, 17 RBIs and 24 stolen bases in 117 games last season. He is a .242 lifetime hitter with 60 steals in 80 attempts. The Padres had hoped to have Jankowski available as a spot starter and late-innings replacement for the start of the season. His injury likely means the team will rely more heavily upon projected outfield starters Wil Myers, Manuel Margot and Hunter Renfroe, with Franmil Reyes also available as a right-handed slugger.
The team also had prospect Josh Naylor catching balls in right field. The 21-year-old played exclusively at first base in his first three minor-league seasons, though he did play 89 games in left field with Double-A San Antonio last season. --Field Level Media
