Edmonton superstar Connor McDavid will not need surgery for a small PCL tear in his left knee, suffered a week ago in the team's season finale. The Oilers announced that McDavid, 22, is expected to be healed by the start of training camp before the 2019-20 season.

"The Oilers medical staff, in collaboration with top orthopaedic specialists, have determined a rehabilitation protocol for Connor McDavid, which will begin immediately," the team said in a statement Friday. X-rays of his left leg were negative, and an MRI showed the torn ligament.

McDavid was driving to the net when he was tripped up by Calgary Flames captain Mark Giordano and went crashing into the post, his left shin taking the brunt of the force. McDavid, who had 41 goals and 116 points, remained on the ice for several minutes and didn't put any weight on his left leg as he was helped to the dressing room.

His point total was second in the NHL to Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning, who had 128 points (41 goals, 87 assists). The Oilers already had been eliminated from contention for the Stanley Cup Playoffs, but McDavid likely was a candidate to play for Canada at the World Hockey Championships next month.
