Light-hitting Herrera leads Marlins over Indians

Eight-hole hitter Rosell Herrera, who entered the night batting .148, went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, leading the host Miami Marlins to a 4-2 win over the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday night. Indians starter Corey Kluber, an All-Star in each of the past three seasons and a two-time American League Cy Young Award winner, left the game with two outs in the fifth inning after he was hit by a Brian Anderson line drive that was clocked at 102 mph.

Kluber (2-3) was struck on his right forearm and left the game immediately due to a contusion. He allowed eight hits and three runs in 4 2/3 innings. Caleb Smith (3-0) earned the win, allowing four hits, two walks and one run in seven innings, striking out eight. He threw first-pitch strikes to 19 of the 25 batters he faced, and he got 21 swings-and-misses.

Drew Steckenrider pitched a scoreless eighth, and Sergio Romo worked around a one-out solo homer by Carlos Santana in the ninth to pick up his fifth save as the Marlins split the two-game series. Miami got three hits in the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead on Anderson's RBI single. Miami might have scored more had it not been for a great throw from Indians right fielder Jordan Luplow, who nailed Curtis Granderson trying to go from first to third on a single.

Cleveland tied the score in the third when Roberto Perez pulled a fastball to left for a 413-foot home run. It was his third homer of the season. Miami took a 3-1 lead with three two-out hits in the fourth. After singles by Jorge Alfaro and Jon Berti, Herrera jumped on a first-pitch changeup, pulling it down the right-field line for a two-run double.

Herrera then pulled a run-scoring single in the sixth, beating reliever Tyler Clippard on a 3-2 fastball. Alfaro was hit by a pitch to start the rally, advanced to second when Berti walked and scored on Herrera's liner for a 4-1 lead. Carlos Santana hit a solo home run for the Indians in the ninth.
