back to back homers aid White Sox secure 5-1 win over Blue Jays

Lucas Giolito allowed one run over seven innings pitched seven innings and Yonder Alonso and Tim Anderson both smacked fourth-inning home runs to lift the visiting Chicago White Sox to a 5-1 victory against the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon. The White Sox won the final two games of the weekend series as the Blue Jays' woes continued. Toronto lost for the 10th time in 12 games.

Giolito improved to 4-1 with a dominant outing, limiting Toronto to four hits and one run while striking out eight and walking just one. Piggybacking off a strong showing in his last outing, Giolito worked seven-plus innings in successive starts for the first time since Aug. 27 and Sept. 3, 2017. Ryan Burr and Aaron Bummer struck out one batter apiece in separate innings of perfect relief.

Chicago scored all five of its runs in the fourth inning, thanks to Alonso's two-run home run and a three-run shot by Anderson. Both shots came against Aaron Sanchez (3-4). Toronto opened the scoring in the first inning, as designated hitter Rowdy Tellez smacked a line-drive single to right field that scored Freddy Galvis.

Sanchez spaced allowed nine hits in six innings, with two walks and 11 strikeouts -- one strikeout off his career high. The right-hander retired the first six hitters he faced -- including five straight via strikeout -- before Anderson opened the White Sox third with a single to right. Anderson went 3-for-4 to pace Chicago's 10-hit attack. Alonso and James McCann added two hits apiece.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had the Blue Jays' lone extra-base hit, a first-inning double against Giolito. The White Sox didn't emerge from Canada unscathed, however.

Just before the game, outfielder Nicky Delmonico was scratched from the Chicago lineup with shoulder soreness. In the third inning, center fielder Leury Garcia exited the game with lower back stiffness after he slammed into the unpadded scoreboard on the right field wall while hauling in a Justin Smoak lineout that likely would have gone for extra bases.
