Following is a summary of current sports news briefs. No driver, no problem for Ariya at U.S. Women's Open
A year after narrowly averting what arguably would have been the biggest ever collapse in major golf, defending champion Ariya Jutanugarn arrives at this week's U.S. Women's Open seeking to spark her game back to life. Though she has not missed a cut this year, and is a healthy 19th on the LPGA Tour money list, 2019 so far has not quite produced the stuff expected of a player widely considered to have the ability to be the woman to beat for years to come. NFL notebook: Raiders sign G Incognito
Guard Richie Incognito signed a one-year deal with the Oakland Raiders on Tuesday. "We've signed him to a one-year 'prove it' deal and that means both on and off the field," Raiders general Mike Mayock told reporters. NBA notebook: Magic denies mistreating employees during Lakers' stint
Reacting to an ESPN report earlier Tuesday that described a toxic culture in the Los Angeles Lakers' front office, Magic Johnson denied mistreating any employees during his stint as team president that ended last month. "Do you think (owner) Jeanie Buss would allow me to abuse the employees? If that was the case, she would have called me in," Johnson said in an ESPN television interview with Stephen A. Smith and Michael Wilbon. (Chief financial officer) Joe McCormack would have called me in, the lawyer for the Lakers. ... It never happened. I'm a person who brings everybody together, uplift the employees. I've never abused an employee, and I never will. That's not what I'm about." MLB roundup: Reds' Dietrich hits three homers
Derek Dietrich had a career-high three home runs and drove in six to lead the Cincinnati Reds to an 11-6 win against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night. Dietrich blasted two-run homers in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings. The run support was more than enough for Cincinnati starter Lucas Sims in his season debut. Sims, who was recalled from Triple-A Louisville earlier in the day, was working on a shutout before giving up a grand slam to Kevin Newman in the eighth. Osaka flirts with early exit as top players struggle at French Open
Naomi Osaka's quest for a third consecutive Grand Slam title almost came to an abrupt end on Tuesday as a number of top players struggled to book their spots in the second round of the French Open. On a windy and chilly day at Roland Garros, world number one Osaka, who won the U.S. and the Australian Opens, lost the opening set to love against Slovakian Anna Karolina Schmiedlova before rallying back for a 0-6 7-6(4) 6-1 victory. Soccer-England must win women's World Cup to support equal pay talks
England must first win the women's World Cup before they can start a discussion on equal pay with their male counterparts, Lionesses forward Fran Kirby said. England, who finished in third place in the 2015 edition, are currently ranked third in the women's world rankings and are among the bookmakers' favorites, along with hosts France and United States, to win the World Cup which begins on June 7. Home favorite Tsonga ready to renew Nishikori rivalry
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is still working his way back after a long-term injury but the home favorite has promised to leave everything on the court when he takes on Japan's Kei Nishikori in Wednesday's French Open second round. Tsonga overcame German Peter Gojowczyk on Monday to reach the second round at Roland Garros for the first time since 2016, as he did not compete here last season and fell at the first hurdle in 2017. Blues look to get back on their feet in Game 2
Blowing a two-goal lead to lose Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final to the Boston Bruins on Monday was no doubt a hit for the St. Louis Blues, but it was another hit during the loss that remained the talk of media availability Tuesday. A helmetless Torey Krug put down Blues rookie Robert Thomas with a punishing blow during the third period that perhaps stands as a metaphor for how the Blues were KO'd in the eventual 4-2 defeat on Sunday. Healthy Woods will likely break my majors record: Nicklaus
Jack Nicklaus reckons his record of 18 major championships will probably be broken by Tiger Woods as long as the former world number one stays healthy through the later stages of his career. Nicklaus, who is hosting this week's Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village in Ohio, said on Tuesday that Woods, who won his 15th major at last month's Masters, will likely have to manage the aches and pain that affect athletes in their 40s. MLB notebook: Phils' Herrera arrested on domestic assault charge
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Odubel Herrera was arrested Monday night and charged with simple assault after a domestic incident at an Atlantic City, N.J., casino, police said. A 20-year-old Philadelphia woman with "visible signs of injury to her arms and neck" identified her boyfriend, Herrera, as the perpetrator of the alleged assault at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino, according to a statement posted Tuesday on Facebook by the Atlantic City Police Department. The woman declined medical attention, police said.
