Indians RHP Clevinger (ankle) back on IL

The Cleveland Indians placed starting pitcher Mike Clevinger on the 10-day injured list on Friday due to a sprained left ankle. Clevinger sustained the injury in his Monday start against the Texas Rangers while fielding a second-inning ground ball. It was his first start since straining a muscle in his back on April 7.

He stayed in the Monday game after the play and pitched 4 2/3 innings, giving up five runs on three hits and three walks. He struck out seven. Clevinger, 28, has started just three games on the season and is 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA. He has 29 strikeouts and seven walks in 16 2/3 innings.

The right-hander was scheduled to start Saturday against the Detroit Tigers. Instead, right-hander Aaron Civale is expected to start in his place and make his major league debut. Civale, 24, is a combined 5-0 with a 2.85 ERA in seven starts between Double-A and Triple-A this year. To fill Clevinger's roster spot, the Indians called up left-handed reliever Josh D. Smith, who had no decisions and a 5.40 ERA in six relief outings for Cleveland earlier this season. Smith, 29, was 6-1 with four saves and a 1.63 ERA in 20 appearances for Triple-A Columbus this season.
