U.S. men likely to wander Wimbledon wilderness once again

The Americans set to compete at Wimbledon are unlikely to end the United States' 19-year drought for the men's title at the All England Club as the nation's top athletes continue to be drawn to other sports, tennis great John McEnroe has said. Normally U.S. tennis fans would hold out hope that 34-year-old John Isner, who reached the semi-finals 12 months ago and is this year's ninth seed, could break through and capture his maiden major title.

Serena headed to Wimbledon seeking return to form

Serena Williams will bring her quest for a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam title to Wimbledon next week where she will try to shake off a nagging knee injury and show the tennis world that her window of opportunity is still open. Williams has been stuck on 23 Grand Slam titles, one behind the all-time record held by Margaret Court, for over two years and has shown little evidence of late that she will be able to snap that drought at the All England Club.

NBA notebook: Durant opts out, will hit free agency

NBA superstar Kevin Durant has declined his $31.5 million player option with the Golden State Warriors and will become an unrestricted free agent, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported Wednesday. The 30-year-old forward and his business manager Rich Kleiman are in New York evaluating free agency options, according to the report. Free agency begins Sunday.

U.S. beat Panama to set up Curacao tie in last eight

Jozy Altidore scored a memorable second-half goal to help the United States to a 1-0 win over Panama on Wednesday and set them up for a quarter-final match against Curacao. Altidore's 42nd strike for the national side with an overhead kick just four meters from goal broke the deadlock 19 minutes into the second period and guaranteed the United States first place in Group D.

Reports: Chiefs WR Hill spends 8 hours with NFL investigators

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Tyreek Hill spent eight hours answering questions from investigators on Wednesday, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Per Schefter's report Hill took part in what was reportedly "a thorough interview," but NFL Network reports he's expected to attend training camp beginning on July 26. MLB roundup: Keuchel earns first win with Braves

Nick Markakis hit a three-run homer, Brian McCann had a solo shot, and the Atlanta Braves held on for a 5-3 win over the host Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night. Dallas Keuchel (1-1) earned his first win since signing a free agent deal with the Braves earlier this month. He allowed three runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings while walking three and striking out two.

Rooney scores from own half in stunning strike for DC United

Wayne Rooney grabbed the headlines in Major League Soccer on Wednesday when he scored an incredible goal for DC United with a strike from inside his own half for the second time in his career. Rooney scored the stunning goal from 70 metres out -- well inside his own half -- in the 10th minute of Wednesday's game against Orlando City.

Trump criticizes Rapinoe for spurning potential White House invite

United States President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Wednesday to criticize U.S women's soccer team co-captain Megan Rapinoe for saying she would not visit the White House if the team won the World Cup. Defending champions the United States face hosts France in the quarter-finals on Friday.

MLB notebook: Stanton on IL, to miss London trip

New York Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton is returning to the 10-day injured list with a strained right posterior cruciate ligament and will miss this weekend's trip to London, manager Aaron Boone told reporters Wednesday. Boone told reporters that Stanton would be re-evaluated in 10 days.

Don't care: Kyrgios the hottest ticket in town

Perhaps, in years to come, tennis fans will yearn for the days of "characters like Nick Kyrgios", just as they do for John McEnroe, the one-time Superbrat everyone loved to hate who is now embraced as a lovable rogue from the golden age. Maybe the Australian will publish an autobiography titled "Bothered" (as in not), just as McEnroe did with "Serious" (as in "you cannot be", his most famous outburst of all).
