Xander Bogaerts drove in four runs, including a three-run homer, and the visiting Boston Red Sox topped the Detroit Tigers 9-6 on Friday. Mookie Betts supplied three hits, scored three runs and knocked in another. Rafael Devers hit a two-run homer and reached base three times.

Red Sox starter Eduardo Rodriguez (9-4) allowed one run on four hits in five innings to collect the victory. The game was delayed two hours and four minutes by rain prior to the sixth inning.

Jeimer Candelario had two hits and drove in two runs for Detroit, while Brandon Dixon contributed two hits and scored twice. John Hicks also knocked in two runs, including a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth. Tigers starter Ryan Carpenter (1-5), called up from Triple-A Toledo earlier in the day, gave up three runs on seven hits in five innings.

The Red Sox scored a run in the first inning. Betts led off with a double down the left-field line. He advanced on a Devers groundout and scored on Bogaerts' grounder. Betts led off the third with a single and scored on Devers' opposite-field shot, his 16th homer this season.

Detroit got on the board in the fourth. Dixon rapped a two-out single and came around to score on Candelario's double to left. Once the long delay ended, the Red Sox extended their lead against reliever Jose Cisnero to 6-1 with three runs in the sixth. Jackie Bradley Jr. brought home the first of those runs with a double. An error by Candelario at third base allowed the next run to score, and Betts capped the inning with a sacrifice fly.

The Tigers rallied with four runs against Marcus Walden in the bottom of the inning. Candelario had an RBI single before two more runs scored when Bradley dropped Harold Castro's liner to centre field. Castro was credited with a sacrifice fly. Hicks' RBI single cut Boston's lead to 6-5. Bogaerts gave the Red Sox plenty of breathing room with his three-run blast in the eighth off Austin Adams. Bogaerts has 17 homers and a team-best 63 RBIs this season.
