America's most decorated track and field athlete may have missed out on a medal at this week's U.S. national championships as she returned to competition for the first time in 13 months after having a daughter in November, but the quest goes on for the six-time Olympic champion.
Games: No Biles, no problem as U.S. steamrolls to Pan Am gold
Simone Biles did not make the trip to Lima but the U.S. women's gymnastics juggernaut didn't need the services of the world and Olympic champion as they steamrolled to the Pan Games team gold medal on Saturday. Even without their leader, the U.S. squad had no problem defending their Pan Games crown by posting a winning total of 171 points, a massive 10 clear of second place Canada with Brazil taking bronze.
Rugby: U.S. Eagles crush Canada at Pacific Nations Cup
The United States crushed Canada 47-19 in a Pacific Nations Cup clash in Colorado on Saturday, the Eagles' final home game before the Rugby World Cup in September. Hooker Dylan Fawsitt got the scoring started for the Eagles when he made it over the try line on the back of the rolling maul to the delight of the sell out crowd at Infinity Park in Glendale.
NASCAR notebook: Harvick-Busch rivalry matures into respect
Pocono Raceway on Saturday announced its NASCAR schedule for the 2020 doubleheader weekend. Next year's schedule will feature a longer weekend and shorter Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races, but considerably more racing action at the 2.5-mile triangular track. For the first time, NASCAR will run two points-paying Cup races on the same weekend, culminating in a 350-miler on Sunday, June 28. The day before, Cup drivers will run their first race of the weekend, with a length still to be determined.
Swimming: Podium protests a thing of the past - FINA executive Marculescu
The executive director of swimming' s governing body FINA Cornel Marculescu said on Sunday he hoped there would be no repeat of the podium protests that marred the world championships this week and that athletes would lose their medals if there was. Australia's silver medalist Mack Horton refused to share the podium with Sun Yang after his victory in the 400 meters freestyle last week, while Briton Duncan Scott shunned the Chinese swimmer on the podium after the 200.
MLB roundup: Hiura blasts walk-off HR in 10th for Brewers
Keston Hiura hit a two-run walkoff homer to cap a three-run 10th inning, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 5-3 on Saturday night. Albert Almora, Jr. homered leading off the 10th to give the Cubs a 3-2 lead, but Milwaukee's Christian Yelich answered with a homer off Cubs closer Craig Kimbrel (0-2) leading off the bottom of the inning. Tyler Saladino followed with a walk, and Huira lined a 1-2 pitch to right for his 11th homer of the season.
NFL notebook: Bengals WR Green leaves practice with injury
Cincinnati Bengals star wide receiver A.J. Green was carted off the practice field Saturday after suffering an injury to his lower left leg. Green came down awkwardly during a 7-on-7 drill, with his left foot appearing to get trapped underneath cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick, who fell after leaping to knock away a pass. Medical staff attended to Green on a sideline bench, checking his left foot, before he walked on his own power to the cart that took him off the field.
MLB notebook: Twins add bullpen help with Romo
The Minnesota Twins acquired right-handed reliever Sergio Romo in a trade with the Miami Marlins on Saturday. In addition to Romo, the Twins will receive minor league righty Chris Vallimont and a player to be named later. The Marlins acquired minor league first baseman Lewin Diaz in the deal.
Cycling: Bernal all but wraps up maiden Colombian Tour title
Climbing phenomenon Egan Bernal was poised to become the first Colombian to win the Tour de France and the youngest race champion in 110 years when he retained the overall lead after Saturday's 20th stage, a 59-km ride from Albertville. The Team Ineos rider, 22, finished fourth in the stage won by 2014 champion Vicenzo Nibali, the only man to interrupt the British outfit's reign on the Tour since 2012.
Swimming: Hosszu, Seto on course for medley double
Hungary's Katinka Hosszu moved a step closer to becoming the first woman to win five world titles in a single event after qualifying fastest for the 400 meters individual medley in Sunday's heats. The "Iron Lady", who won her first gold medal in the event a decade ago in Rome, came home in 4:35.40, ahead of Japan's Yu Ohashi and China's Ye Shiwen.
