Rafa Nadal began his quest for a fourth U.S. Open crown with a ruthless hammering of Australian John Millman in their opener on Tuesday, as the Spaniard's half of the draw was blown wide open following the exit of four top-10 seeds. Millman had shocked five-times winner Roger Federer in a surprising run to the quarter-finals last year but was denied a similar fairytale result by the Spanish second seed who cruised to a 6-3 6-2 6-2 victory.

Unseeded Russian Andrey Rublev stunned eighth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4 6-7(5) 7-6(7) 7-5 while Kazakh Mikhail Kukushkin outlasted 10th seed Roberto Bautista Agut 3-6 6-1 6-4 3-6 6-3. The bottom half of the draw further opened up for Nadal when Thomas Fabbiano beat fourth seed Dominic Thiem 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-2 and Vasek Pospisil toppled Karen Khachanov 4-6 7-5 7-5 4-6 6-3.

Australia's Nick Kyrgios swatted aside Steve Johnson 6-3 7-6(1) 6-4 but not before receiving a code violation for an audible obscenity following an argument with the chair umpire. Among the women, holder Naomi Osaka survived a scare to get past world number 84 Anna Blinkova 6-4 6-7(5) 6-2.

She was joined in the next round by Wimbledon winner Simona Halep who rallied past American Nicole Gibbs 6-3 3-6 6-2. Cori "Coco" Gauff, the American 15-year-old who reached the last 16 at Wimbledon earlier this year, fought back from a set down to beat Anastasia Potapova 3-6 6-2 6-4.

Her compatriot and 2017 U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens fought off two match points against Russian qualifier Anna Kalinskaya but could not prevent a 6-3 6-4 upset. Highlights of the second day at the U.S. Open, the final Grand Slam tournament of the year, on Tuesday (times GMT):
