Rugby League-Burgess set to retire from NRL - report
- Country:
- Australia
Dual code international Sam Burgess is set to retire from Australia's National Rugby League after complications with a shoulder injury, local media reported on Wednesday. Burgess's club, South Sydney Rabbitohs, were expected to confirm the 30-year-old Englishman's retirement later on Wednesday, Sydney's Daily Telegraph newspaper said.
Burgess, who is contracted with the Rabbitohs until 2022, struggled through the 2019 season after hurting his shoulder earlier in the year. Lured to the Rabbitohs by co-owner and Hollywood actor Russell Crowe in 2009, Burgess helped the team break their 43-year NRL championship drought in 2014.
He made the switch to rugby union to represent England at the 2015 World Cup before returning to rugby league for the 2016 NRL season.
