Milwaukee left-hander Josh Hader suffered his first defeat of 2020 on Friday, losing his arbitration hearing with the Brewers. Hader will earn $4.1 million in 2020, rather than the $6.4 million he requested.

Players with three years of major league service, but not more than six years, can request salary arbitration, although most players end up coming to an agreement on a salary with their clubs. Some players just under three years are eligible for arbitration, as Hader was, with two years and 115 days of service time. Hader went 3-5 with a 2.62 ERA in 2019 and had 37 saves in 44 chances. He still earned a significant increase on the $687,000 he earned in 2018.

Hader's defeat leaves players 1-6 in salary arbitration hearings with seven more to go. In addition to Hader, the Los Angeles Dodgers' Joc Pederson, the Colorado Rockies' Tony Wolters, the Atlanta Braves' Shane Greene, the Minnesota Twins' Jose Berrios, and the Boston Red Sox's Eduardo Rodriguez all lost their hearings. The only player to win his hearing so far is Dodgers right-hander Pedro Baez, who will earn his requested $4 million after the team countered at $3.5 million.
