Capitals sign Swiss forward Riat to two-year deal

The Washington Capitals have signed Damien Riat to a two-year entry-level contract, nearly four years after drafting the Swiss forward. The deal announced Thursday by general manager Brian MacLellan carries an average annual value of $817,500.

Riat was a fourth-round draft pick (117th overall) in 2016. He played in the Capitals' preseason opener on Sept. 18, 2017, against the New Jersey Devils before returning to Switzerland.

Riat has 22 points (11 goals, 11 assists) in 36 games this season with EHC Biel-Bienne in the Swiss National League. He has 106 career points (50 goals, 56 assists) in 223 games in the league. Riat earned a silver medal with Switzerland at the 2018 IIHF World Championship.
