Godavari Biorefineries Launches Eco-Friendly Bio-Based Chemical Plant in Maharashtra
Godavari Biorefineries Ltd has opened a new specialty biochemical plant in Sakarwadi, Maharashtra, to produce bio-based chemicals. The facility aims to provide sustainable chemical solutions for various industries, using green chemistry and collaborating with farmers to create sustainable agricultural value chains.

Godavari Biorefineries Ltd, a subsidiary of the Somaiya Group, has inaugurated a state-of-the-art specialty biochemical plant in Sakarwadi, Maharashtra. This new facility will focus on producing bio-based chemicals such as biobutanol, ethers, and esters, essential for industries including coatings, resins, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food, and fragrances.
Speaking on the development, Samir Somaiya, Chairman of the Somaiya Group, stated, "At Godavari Biorefineries, we are committed to creating specialty chemicals from renewable resources through green chemistry. Our collaboration with farmers helps build sustainable agricultural value chains to support the feedstock for our bio-based chemicals."
Chief Executive Officer Sangeeta Srivastava emphasized that this new plant aligns with Godavari's strategy to boost its capacity for bio-based chemicals, supporting companies focusing on sustainable ingredients. "We work closely with our customers to develop new bio-based chemical building blocks. This journey towards net zero opens doors for new partnerships," she remarked.
The inaugural event saw the presence of esteemed chemical engineer M M Sharma, who highlighted the significance of research and development in these efforts. He praised Godavari's initiatives but underscored the need to expedite the pace of change.
With over eighty years of expertise in the sugar industry, Godavari works in close collaboration with farmers growing sugarcane and other biomass crops as feedstock for its innovative bio-based chemicals.
