Today, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) hosted a workshop titled “Transforming Rural Landscape: Designing 5G Intelligent Villages” to delve into the transformative possibilities of 5G technology in rural development.
The workshop underscored the government's commitment to enhancing rural development by showcasing initiatives aimed at bolstering connectivity, promoting digital literacy, and fostering sustainable practices to uplift rural communities' quality of life.
Dr. Neeraj Mittal, Secretary (T) of the DoT, emphasized the collaborative efforts needed to realize the vision of intelligent villages. He highlighted the concept of smart and intelligent villages, envisioning communities capable of sensing their environment, gathering data, and making informed decisions with the aid of technology. Dr. Mittal called upon industry and telecom service providers to adopt villages and deploy technological solutions that could transform them into intelligent hubs, fostering sustainable and prosperous futures for rural India.
Madhu Arora, Member (T), emphasized the imperative to bridge the digital divide between urban and rural landscapes. She highlighted how evolving technologies, including 5G, could enrich rural life across sectors such as education, health, agriculture, environmental conservation, and efficient use of natural resources.
Shri A. Robert J. Ravi, DDG (SRI), stressed the importance of ensuring that technological advancements truly enhance rural livelihoods. He advocated for innovative solutions like intelligent displays and micro-robots to empower 5G Intelligent Villages, benefiting all sectors and contributing to societal welfare, especially in rural areas.
The workshop included insightful sessions on building rural connectivity, real-world use cases of 5G innovations, AI-powered monitoring, and on-ground 5G network infrastructure. A panel discussion on the deployment of Intelligent Villages explored topics ranging from renewable energy and smart agriculture to digital literacy and infrastructure development, allowing participants to interact with industry experts and explore practical applications of these technologies.
Representatives from the DoT, industry leaders, MSMEs, startups, academia, and other stakeholders actively participated in the workshop. The event aimed to integrate cutting-edge technologies like 5G with traditional rural practices, paving the way for sustainable growth and improved living standards in rural India.
