Angel Yeast Leads Synthetic Biology Revolution with New Consortium
Angel Yeast is leading a new initiative to form a consortium uniting universities and enterprises to advance synthetic biology technology. The initiative also focuses on building the Xiaoting Synthetic Biology Industrial Park in Yichang, Hubei Province, aiming to create a 50-billion-yuan industry cluster by 2035.
Angel Yeast, a global leader in yeast manufacturing, is spearheading an initiative to form a consortium uniting universities and enterprises to advance synthetic biology technology. The project also aims to accelerate the construction of the Xiaoting Synthetic Biology Industrial Park in Yichang, Hubei Province, establishing an integrated industry chain that spans from yeast production to bio-manufacturing.
Dubbed the third biological science revolution, synthetic biology transforms each cell into a 'super factory,' producing specific substances for applications in food, medicine, biochemicals, and new materials. Angel Yeast, a leader in yeast R&D and production, envisions developing a 50-billion-yuan industry cluster by 2035.
The Xiaoting Synthetic Biology Industrial Park was unveiled in 2023, and the consortium was founded in May 2024. The consortium will address bottlenecks in core technologies and push for the development of standards and patents in synthetic biology, said Zhang Yan, Dean of the Angel Yeast Research Institute. The project, in its initial phase, is producing various biochemical products, with a future focus on innovative bio-based materials.
