British authorities have shut down 'Russian Coms,' an online platform which facilitated fraudulent phone calls to steal money from people globally, the National Crime Agency (NCA) announced.

The crime-as-a-service platform allowed criminals to impersonate legitimate entities like banks or credit card firms to defraud victims over the phone. The operation had caused financial losses in the tens of millions of pounds and affected an estimated 170,000 victims in the UK alone. The platform facilitated 1.3 million calls to UK numbers between 2021 and 2024, with global victim estimates not provided.

Authorities arrested three individuals from east London, suspected of developing Russian Coms, and released them on conditional bail. Fraud now constitutes 40% of all crime in England and Wales, with technology enabling over 80% of it. Adrian Searle, director of the NCA’s National Economic Crime Centre, emphasized the growing technological trend in cybercrime.

British authorities have previously dismantled similar platforms, revealing the persistent challenge in catching cybercriminals. Russian Coms was sold as a handset or web application, accepting payment via cryptocurrency. Features included encrypted calls, voice-changing services, and 24/7 customer support.
