Greek Coast Guard Seizes Over €1 Million Worth of Cocaine in Container Ship

The Greek authorities have confiscated cocaine valued at more than €1 million that was hidden in a sea container filled with bananas, according to a statement by the coast guard. The significant drug seizure took place at Piraeus port on Monday.

The find included approximately 35 kilograms of cocaine distributed in 30 packages concealed within the cooling system of the banana container. This operation was carried out with the support of the Homeland Security Investigations unit of the U.S. embassy in Athens, highlighting international collaboration in combating drug trafficking.

This confiscation follows a May operation in which Greek authorities dismantled an international cocaine trafficking group. Days after the initial bust, over 109 kilograms of cocaine were found hidden in another shipping container bound for Europe. The surge in South American cocaine production has turned Europe into the world’s largest market for the drug.
