The Odisha government has initiated a new system for the online payment of electricity bills for panchayats, unveiling both a dedicated website and a mobile app named GCMS (Government Consumer Management System).

The launch was marked by the presence of Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo and Rural Development Minister Rabi Narayan Naik. Jointly developed by the Energy Department, Panchayati Raj & Drinking Water Department, NIC, and Tata Power Ltd, GCMS promises to streamline bill payments.

Officials noted that the state currently spends approximately Rs 250 crore annually on electricity bills for street lights and drinking water supply among other expenses across panchayats, with delayed payments being a significant issue. The new system aims to address these delays, thereby reducing arrears and improving overall efficiency.
