NotebookLM, launched last year, now offers a more interactive experience for users managing their notes and research materials. Integrating Google's Gemini AI model, Audio Overview allows users to input their research and receive a synthesized, audio-based summary presented by AI hosts.

These AI hosts are designed to summarize material, draw connections between topics, and engage in conversational banter, creating an audio version of the detailed text summaries previously available, according to The Verge. The feature aims to make research findings more engaging.

During internal tests, the AI-generated podcast discussed the invention of the lightbulb, covering Thomas Edison and the teamwork involved. Despite some quirks, such as spelling out words and using informal phrases, the conversation was lively and educational, according to The Verge.

However, there are limitations to the Audio Overview feature. Google notes that it is designed to reflect user notes rather than provide a comprehensive or objective view. The process can also be time-consuming, and it's currently only available in English, according to The Verge. Users should be cautious as the AI may not always provide accurate information.

To explore this functionality, users can open a notebook in NotebookLM, select the Notebook guide in the bottom-right corner, and choose the "Audio Overview" option.
