Union Minister Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma unveiled three groundbreaking initiatives to enhance research and development in India's steelmaking sector. These efforts are a part of the Steel Research Technology Mission of India (SRTMI), a collaborative endeavor between the Ministry of Steel and domestic steel industry stakeholders.
The Minister of State for Steel introduced the initiatives and a new SRTMI web portal during the 'Catalysing R&D in the Indian Steel Sector' event in the national capital. These moves are pivotal as India aims to expand its steel capacity to 300 million tonnes by 2030. Varma emphasized the critical need for technology commercialization and the indigenous manufacture of capital goods.
Steel Secretary Sandeep Poundrik highlighted the importance of research tailored to India's unique industry dynamics, where a significant portion of capacity is in the secondary steel sector. The initiatives include methods to address industry-wide challenges, foster open research, and support startups in developing advanced steel technologies.
