Elon Musk's Legal Battle Over OpenAI's For-Profit Shift
Elon Musk is suing OpenAI, claiming it abandoned its nonprofit mission to enrich its leaders by becoming a for-profit entity. Musk alleges his $38 million donation was misused and seeks $150 billion in damages. The trial unfolds tensions over governance and ethical concerns in AI development.
Elon Musk faced tough questioning from OpenAI's lawyer, William Savitt, during a courtroom battle on Thursday. At the heart of the case is Musk's claim that OpenAI's pivot from nonprofit to for-profit violated the original mission and misused his donation.
Musk, under cross-examination, admitted to not reading the finer details of a 2017 term sheet that outlined OpenAI's shift. OpenAI maintains that Musk is trying to control the company after leaving the board in 2018, accusing him of wanting to boost his own AI venture.
The trial, which started on Monday, highlights the ethical and governance issues in the development of AI technology. Musk seeks $150 billion in damages and changes to OpenAI's structure, emphasizing the potential risks AI poses to humanity.
