India-EU Join Forces to Recycle EV Batteries

India and the EU have launched a joint initiative to recycle electric vehicle batteries, focusing on securing critical raw materials and promoting a circular economy. With a fund of 15.2 million euros, the project aims to develop advanced recycling technologies and enhance India-EU bilateral relations.

India and the European Union have initiated a collaborative call for proposals to recycle electric vehicle (EV) batteries, marking an important milestone in their strategic partnership. This effort is part of the India-EU Trade and Technology Council's commitment to green and clean energy technologies.

The initiative, funded through a 15.2 million euro pool from the EU's Horizon Europe programme and supported by India's Ministry of Heavy Industries, aims to ensure resource security and bolster the transition to a circular economy. It will focus on advanced recycling technologies, including high-efficiency material recovery and innovative process demonstrations.

Ajay Kumar Sood, India's principal scientific adviser, emphasized the critical nature of creating a robust domestic recycling ecosystem as India's EV market expands. Proposals for the initiative are to be submitted by September 15.
