The private sector says that command agriculture has placed a firm foundation towards the change of the domestic agricultural sector with the country slowly moving towards arriving its breadbasket status.

Zimbabwe, whose trade deficit for the first four months of the year stood at USD 1 billion, has displayed its commitment to increasing production in the agricultural sector, reforming ability utilization in the manufacturing sector and ensuring export-led rise with the extension of the command agriculture programme.

Ending of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Zimbabwe (ICAZ) winter school held in Victoria Falls 2018, delegates told that the advantage of the agro-import substitution programme is beginning to be realized.

The CEO Africa Roundtable Mr Kipson Gundani said, “We are beginning to see the benefits of the government-led import substitution programme. It is therefore imperative that going forward, the private sector take over from the government and championing the revitalization of the agricultural sector.”

ZB Bank CEO, Ron Mutandagayi stated that command agriculture has so far played a crucial role in filling up the funding interval and highlighted the requirement for financial institutions to complement government in the programme.

Mutandagayi also said “We had a situation where we required an organized method of making agriculture work again and I think the command agriculture programme has done that. In the long run, we now need banks to play a part by financing this critical sector.”
