Harvey staying with Reds after Brewers fail to work out trade

Matt Harvey will stay with the Cincinnati Reds and make his scheduled Friday start after the Milwaukee Brewers were unable to complete a trade by the 1:30 p.m. ET deadline, according to Reds general manager Nick Krall.

Milwaukee claimed Harvey off revocable waivers on Wednesday, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman. Teams have 48 hours to complete a trade after a claim is made.

Reds interim manager Jim Riggleman had said earlier he expected that Harvey would be pitching against the Chicago Cubs on Friday.

"We've known for a few days that there could be a possibility of a trade, so we had some guys lined up if (Harvey) weren't to pitch. But we fully expect him to be pitching," Riggleman said.

The Brewers are tied for the second wild card entering Friday's games and are only a half-game out of the first wild card.

The Chicago Cubs hold a 3 1/2-game lead in the National League Central entering the weekend.

Harvey has a 4.91 ERA between the New York Mets and Reds, with whom his numbers have improved. Cincinnati acquired Harvey for catcher Devin Mesoraco in May.

The 29-year-old Harvey was 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA when he was designated for assignment by the Mets. Three days later, the Reds completed the trade.

Critical in Harvey's turnaround is an increase in first-pitch strikes to 63.3 percent. He is averaging only 5 1/3 innings per start and his strikeout numbers aren't what they once were -- currently 6.9 Ks per 9 IP.

Harvey can be a free agent after the season.
