Leading global investment bank Goldman Sachs today said it has appointed Prachi Mishra as managing director and chief India economist with immediate effect.

Mishra will be based in Mumbai, Goldman Sachs said in a release.

Prior to joining Goldman Sachs, Mishra was the deputy division chief of the Western Hemisphere Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Earlier, she also headed the Strategic Research Unit at the Reserve Bank of India and prior to that she worked as a senior economist at both the IMF and the Ministry of Finance.

In 2016, Tushar Poddar, chief economist for India at Goldman Sachs Group Inc, had left the company.

In the interim, Andrew Tilton, chief Asia economist, along with a team of on the ground Indian professionals doing macroeconomic research managed the role.

Mishra has a PhD and an M Phil in Economics from Columbia University. She also has an MA and a BA in Economics from the University of Delhi.

Goldman Sachs serves corporate and institutional clients through corporate finance (investment banking), equity sales and trading and fixed income securities businesses, as well as providing macroeconomic and investment research.

Goldman Sachs is also an investor in India, deploying more than USD 3.4 billion in the capital since 2006.
