Wheat, other bold grains up on firm demand

Grains: Prices of wheat and other bold grains firmed up at the wholesale grains market during the week following an upsurge in demand against restricted supplies from growing regions.

However, rice basmati and non-basmati ended lower on muted demand against sufficient stocks position.

Traders said increased demand from flour mills amid a pause in arrivals from producing belts mainly led to the rise in wheat prices.

Increased offtake by consuming industries also helped other bold grains prices to end higher, they said.

In the national capital, wheat (desi) and wheat dara (for mills) rose by Rs 30 each to Rs 2,350-2,450 and Rs 2,030-2,035 per quintal respectively.

Atta chakki delivery followed suit and enquired higher by a similar margin to Rs 2,040-2,045 per 90 kg.

Atta flour mills and maida also edged up by Rs 10 each to Rs 1,080-1,100 and Rs 1,180-1,190 per 50 kg respectively.

Other bold grains like maize went up by Rs 60 to Rs 1,420-1,425 per quintal.

Bajra and barley also hardened by Rs 10 and Rs 50 to Rs 1,360-1,365 and Rs 1,610-1,620 per quintal respectively.

On the other hand, rice basmati common and Pusa-1121 variety drifted lower by Rs 200 each to Rs 7,700-7,800 and Rs 6,650-6,750 per quintal respectively.

Non-basmati rice permal raw, wand, sela and IR-8 also settled lower at Rs 2,375-2,400, Rs 2,500-2,550, Rs 3,000-3,100 and Rs 2,000-2,050 as compared to previous levels of Rs 2,425-2,450, Rs 2,525-2,575, Rs 3,050-3,150 and Rs 2,025-2,075 per quintal respectively in line with rice basmati trend.
