A goods train suddenly ran backwards and hit a car and a motorcycle at a railway crossing in Maharashtra's Nagpur city, injuring two persons, one of whom jumped out of his vehicle to save himself, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place at the Bokhara railway crossing gate in the Koradi police station area on Monday night.

According to the police, the freight train passed through the railway crossing and then suddenly moved in reverse direction, colliding with the car and the motorcycle that were crossing the tracks.

The car driver, Amol Narayan Gharmare (35), a local resident, was able to save his life by jumping out of the vehicle in time though he suffered injuries, they said.

The car was pushed by the train and it hit a motorcycle on the tracks. The motorbike rider suffered fractures, according to the police.

The police have registered a case against the loco pilot of the goods train and the on-duty railway crossing staffer under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
