Kolkata Metro Leads with India's First Battery Backup System

Metro Railway Kolkata is set to introduce India's first Battery Energy Storage System to ensure trains can move to the nearest station during power outages. The system, designed for the Dakshineswar-New Garia corridor, aims to enhance commuter safety and energy efficiency, with completion expected by year's end.

In a pioneering move, Metro Railway Kolkata is set to install India's first Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to enhance passenger safety and ensure uninterrupted service during power outages, an official confirmed.

This innovative system will be implemented on the Dakshineswar-New Garia corridor (Blue Line), the city's oldest metro line, and is slated for completion by year’s end.

A Metro spokesperson highlighted that this initiative utilizes Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) batteries to store and convert energy efficiently, aiming to reduce carbon footprints and improve overall energy consumption.
