Delhi Govt Cracks Down on Overage Vehicles: Park Privately or Scrap

The Delhi government has issued a public notice mandating that overage vehicles must be parked in private spaces or be scrapped. The enforcement wing may impound these vehicles if found in public areas, even if a No Objection Certificate (NOC) has been issued and the vehicle has not been relocated.

Overage vehicles must be parked in private spaces or scrapped, the Delhi government declared in a public notice on Thursday.

The statement emphasized that vehicles found in public places against the guidelines risk being impounded. The transport department reiterated its February guidelines, forbidding the parking of overage vehicles outside residences, defined as public places.

“Owners should keep such vehicles in private parking spaces, not in shared spaces, even within residential complexes,” the notice stated.

The Delhi government has deregistered 5.5 million overage vehicles, while owners can obtain a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to move these vehicles out of Delhi within a year of expiry. Post expiry, no NOC will be issued.

Alternatively, owners can scrap their vehicles using the Voluntary Vehicle Scrapping Application at registered scrapping facilities, according to the notice.

The enforcement wing, New Delhi Municipal Council, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, and Traffic Police may impound vehicles in public areas, even if an NOC is issued but the vehicle hasn't left Delhi within a month.

Offenders risk prosecution under the 'Guidelines for Handling of End of Life Vehicles 2024'. The Supreme Court banned diesel and petrol vehicles over 10 and 15 years old, respectively, in Delhi in 2018. The National Green Tribunal's 2014 order also bars vehicles over 15 years old from public parking.
