India's Textile Boom: Eyeing a USD 350 Billion Market

Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh announces the expansion of the Rs 10,000 crore PLI scheme to the garment sector to boost domestic manufacturing and exports. Addressing the India International Garment Fair, Singh emphasizes targeting USD 50 billion in exports, revamping textile parks, and promoting green textiles.

Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh on Tuesday unveiled the government's plan to expand the Rs 10,000 crore production linked incentive (PLI) scheme to the garment sector. The move, aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing and exports, was announced during the India International Garment Fair (IIGF).

Singh highlighted the massive potential for increasing textile exports, urging the industry to set sights on USD 50 billion worth of shipments in coming years. Approved in 2021, the PLI scheme's Rs 10,683 crore outlay over five years will support the production of man-made fibre (MMF) apparel, MMF fabrics, and technical textile products to bolster the sector’s competitiveness.

Singh also called for the adoption of the 'hub and spoke' model to enhance domestic manufacturing, encouraged industry collaboration and underscored the importance of establishing Indian brands. The ministry is also poised to revive the Scheme for Integrated Textile Parks (SITP) to create internationally standardized parks.
