A passenger train derailment in Northern Russia's Komi republic has resulted in the deaths of at least two individuals, while another remains missing, according to a statement from the state-run railway company on Thursday.
The incident occurred Wednesday night and involved a train with 14 carriages, nine of which left the tracks. Up to 50 people sustained injuries in the derailment, as reported by Russia's Interfax news agency, which cited emergency officials.
The train, which was en route to the southern city of Novorossiysk from Vorkuta, a northern coal mining town, was carrying 232 passengers. Russian Railways indicated that heavy rainfall, which had washed out parts of the track, was the probable cause of the accident.
In response to the tragedy, Russian Railways has pledged to provide 2 million Rubles (just under USD 22,900) to the families of each deceased victim on top of a 2.025 million-Ruble (approximately USD 23,100) insurance payout. Injured passengers hospitalized will receive 1 million Rubles (about USD 11,400) each, while those who received outpatient medical care will get 5,00,000 Rubles (about USD 5,700).
