European shares opened lower on Monday following a slew of disappointing company updates and increased anxiousness among investors after an assassination attempt on U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump. As of 0711 GMT, the continent-wide STOXX 600 had dropped nearly 0.5%.

Heavy losses were led by Burberry, which saw its shares tumble 11.4% after announcing Joshua Schulman as its new chief executive, replacing Jonathan Akeroyd. The British luxury group has issued a profit warning and scrapped its dividend. Swatch Group also saw significant declines, with shares falling by 10.6% due to a sharp decrease in first-half sales and earnings.

The personal and household goods sector, which includes both Burberry and Swatch Group, fell by 1.1%, leading sectoral declines. Additionally, Finnish bank Nordea lost 3.1% after reporting second-quarter operating earnings that missed expectations.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump is set to be formally nominated as the Republican presidential candidate in Milwaukee later this week after surviving an assassination attempt that has further polarized U.S. politics. Investors are particularly attentive ahead of ECB President Christine Lagarde's remarks and the central bank's upcoming policy meeting.
