The power tariff for different sections of consumers in Tamil Nadu was revised on Monday in response to escalating financial losses, according to state-run discom TANGEDCO.

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) announced what they described as a 'small' revision in tariffs.

Per the revised figures, domestic consumers will see increases between Rs 5 and Rs 40, depending on their usage category.

Nonetheless, the free power scheme for up to 100 units and subsidies for sectors like agriculture and places of worship will continue.

For 63 lakh domestic consumers using up to 200 units over two months, the increase will be capped at Rs 5 per month, while those using up to 300 units will face a Rs 15 hike.

Consumers using 400 and 500 units over two months will see their tariffs rise by Rs 25 and Rs 40, respectively.

The tariff for industries with low and high transmission needs will also be increased by 35 paise per unit.

Opposition parties, including the Pattali Makkal Katchi and Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, have voiced their objections.
