Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has announced plans to harness the Tizu-Zunki river to promote economic development in Nagaland, facilitating both cargo and passenger transport. He made the announcement on Monday at a conference organized by the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) in Chumoukedima district, Nagaland.

Highlighting the benefits, Sonowal said that waterways represent the most economical, sustainable, and efficient mode of transportation. He urged active participation from Nagaland to capitalize on this opportunity.

The Tizu and Zunki rivers, critical waterways in Nagaland, serve as starting points in Kiphire district and extend to Chindwin. The IWAI will conduct feasibility studies for NW 101, focusing on fairway development, navigational aids, and skill development. Additionally, both the Nagaland government and IWAI aim to explore tourism potential, particularly at Doyang river lake.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Sonowal jointly unveiled plans to develop the Tizu-Zunki waterways (National Waterways 101), with a combined effort from IWAI and the state’s transport department. They emphasized the need for maritime skill development for youth at the Maritime Skill Development Centre, aiming to create employment opportunities in the marine sector.

Sonowal emphasized that the complex waterways in Northeast India present a unique opportunity for regional development and nation-building. The government’s commitment remains strong to utilize these waterways for the region's prosperity.
