Global Airfare Trends: A Post-COVID Rollercoaster

Holidaymakers experienced 3.1% lower prices for international flights in the first half of 2024, despite earlier significant price hikes. Economy class tickets dropped notably, except within Europe and Africa. Overall, prices remain higher post-COVID. Lufthansa has revised its profit targets due to cost challenges and operational issues.

Holidaymakers enjoyed a 3.1% dip in international flight prices during the first half of 2024, following last year's significant price hikes, according to Germany's Federal Statistics Office (Destatis).

Economy class tickets saw the most notable declines: fares to Central America dropped 15.8%, to Asia and Australia 12.3%, and to North America 7.4%. In contrast, tickets within Europe and to Africa saw price increases of 2.7% and 4.1% respectively, while domestic flight prices inched up by 0.2%.

Despite the temporary relief, international flight prices are still 20.9% higher compared to two years ago. The post-COVID travel boom is plateauing, affecting airfares across Europe and Asia. Lufthansa has cut its profit target for the second time this year, grappling with high wage settlements and operational issues from planemakers Airbus and Boeing.
