U.S. stocks experienced a third consecutive day of decline due to a global technical outage caused by a software glitch in Crowdstrike's cybersecurity software, affecting multiple industries. Crowdstrike shares fell significantly, while rivals Palo Alto Networks and Sentinal One saw gains. Major U.S. stock indexes were impacted, with the Dow managing some gains despite the turmoil.
U.S. stocks continued their downward trajectory for the third straight day on Friday, exacerbated by lingering chaos from a global technical outage triggered by a software glitch in Crowdstrike's cybersecurity software. The worldwide tech disruption affected operations in various sectors such as airlines, banking, and healthcare, as Microsoft's Windows operating system faced crashes.
Despite identifying the flaw and implementing fixes, technical issues persist, affecting certain services. As a result, Crowdstrike shares plummeted by 12.1%, while rival cybersecurity firms Palo Alto Networks and Sentinal One saw modest gains of 1.6% and 8.5%, respectively.
The sell-off impacted all three major U.S. stock indexes, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average taking the hardest hit. Both the Nasdaq and S&P 500 are on track for their worst week since April, while the Dow is set to post a slight weekly gain despite earlier record highs. The tech-heavy Nasdaq is poised to end its six-week winning streak, according to industry experts.
