Delta Air Lines Chaos: USDOT Investigates Massive Flight Cancellations
The U.S. Transportation Department has initiated an investigation into Delta Air Lines following the carrier's cancellation of over 5,000 flights due to a global cyber outage. The investigation aims to ensure Delta is adhering to passenger rights during this disruption. The situation has left customers frustrated and seeking alternative travel options.
The U.S. Transportation Department announced on Tuesday an investigation into Delta Air Lines after the airline canceled more than 5,000 flights since Friday. The widespread cancellations were caused by a global cyber outage affecting many airlines, but Delta has struggled to recover compared to its peers.
By Tuesday morning, Delta had scrapped 418 flights, around 12% of its schedule, while delaying another 356. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg emphasized that the investigation seeks to ensure Delta follows regulations and protects passengers' rights amid ongoing disruptions.
Delta CEO Ed Bastian remarked that the airline's operations would require a few more days to recover. The cyber issue, tied to a software update by CrowdStrike, has caused severe inconvenience for passengers, some of whom have resorted to renting cars or waiting days for new flights.
