MSME players on Tuesday lauded the government's measures such as the massive reduction in TDS on e-commerce operators as a sign of commitment to bolster small enterprises and enhance job creation in a critical sector of the economy.

In the FY25 Budget, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed eight initiatives aimed at strengthening the MSME sector, which contributes significantly to India's manufacturing and exports. Anil Bhardwaj, Secretary General of the Federation of Indian Micro Small and Medium Enterprises, welcomed the government's decision to reduce TDS to 0.1% for e-commerce operators and to develop a new credit assessment model based on MSMEs' digital footprints.

The e-commerce industry, projected to reach USD 350 billion by 2030, is expected to benefit substantially from these initiatives, advancing India's digital economy and aiding sellers. Sanjay Sharma, MD and CEO of Aye Finance, highlighted the advantages for organised SMEs, while noting a gap in support for micro-scale enterprises. The government's focus on job creation through budget measures will benefit manufacturing and boost consumption, with positive impacts on sectors such as consumer durables.
