Ukrainians Show Increased Willingness for Territorial Concessions, Survey Reveals

A recent poll by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology reveals a three-fold increase in Ukrainians willing to concede some territory to Russia for a swift end to the war. However, the majority still oppose any territorial concessions, illustrating a complex stance on peace and sovereignty.

Ukrainians Show Increased Willingness for Territorial Concessions, Survey Reveals

A recent survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology found that nearly one-third of Ukrainians are now willing to accept some territorial concessions to Russia for a quick end to the ongoing conflict. This reflects a significant shift from last year when only 10% were open to compromises.

The poll, conducted from May 16-22 with 1,067 respondents in Ukrainian-held areas, also highlighted that 55% of Ukrainians remain firmly against any territorial concessions. Despite facing a tough Russian offensive, Kyiv's forces have struggled to regain lost ground.

The survey did not specify the exact concessions or territories under consideration. KIIS clarified that many poll participants do not equate concessions with formally recognizing Russian control but are considering postponing the liberation of certain areas.

Russia's 2022 annexation claims over Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions remain a contentious issue. KIIS's executive director, Anton Hrushetskyi, emphasized that while some Ukrainians are open to talking about concessions, they vehemently oppose peace at any cost.
