The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $200 million loan to support the expansion of metro rail corridors and enhance transport connectivity in Nagpur, India. The Nagpur Metro Urban Mobility Project aims to address rising travel demand and improve urban mobility through an efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly public transport system.
"ADB's support will extend Nagpur's metro rail network to meet rising travel demand and enhance the economy," said Sharad Saxena, ADB Principal Transport Specialist. "This project will make the city more livable—improving the urban environment and mobility of residents and enhancing their access to basic services."
Key components of the project include:
Expansion of Metro Rail Corridors: The project will finance the extension of four metro rail corridors:
Automotive Square to Kanhan
Prajapati Nagar to Transport Nagar
Khapri to Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation ESR
Lokmanya Nagar to Hingna
Infrastructure Development: The project will construct 43.8 kilometers of elevated metro rail corridors with 32 stations. These stations will be equipped with modern safety and security technology and designed to be accessible for women, students, and people with disabilities.
Improved Connectivity: ADB will support Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) in connecting metro rail stations with city transport services, including buses, e-rickshaws, e-scooters, and bicycles. This will promote non-motorized transportation and improve last-mile connectivity to the outskirts of Nagpur.
Institutional Support and Capacity Building: The project includes developing a 5-year institutional action plan for Maha Metro, incorporating a gender equality and social inclusion-responsive workplace strategy, enhancing digital project management platforms, and providing staff training on metro planning and management. It also aims to increase employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for women and disadvantaged groups through skills training, internships, and apprenticeships.
The project is expected to significantly boost Nagpur's urban mobility, improve the quality of public transport, and contribute to the city's sustainable development goals. By extending the metro network, ADB aims to alleviate traffic congestion, enhance productivity, and create a more livable urban environment for Nagpur's residents.
