The South African government has extended its congratulations to Nwabisa Makunga on her recent appointment as Chairperson of the South African National Editors Forum (SANEF). Currently serving as the Deputy Chairperson, Makunga's promotion is seen as a testament to her exceptional leadership skills and dedication to the media industry.
Nomonde Mnukwa, Acting Director-General of the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS), praised Makunga's elevation, highlighting it as an inspiration for women journalists and a significant step towards gender equality in the media sector. "Makunga's new role is not only a reflection of her capabilities but also a demonstration of how the media industry is making strides in affirming gender equality," Mnukwa said.
As Chairperson, Makunga will lead SANEF in addressing various challenges facing the media landscape, including the rise of digital and social media, declining revenues, and the proliferation of fake news driven by artificial intelligence. "The media sector is undergoing significant transformations, and SANEF will play a crucial role in navigating these challenges while upholding press freedom and ethical journalism," Mnukwa noted.
The GCIS expressed its eagerness to strengthen its partnership with SANEF and its leadership. "We acknowledge the vital role SANEF plays in promoting press freedom, media diversity, and ethical journalism in South Africa," Mnukwa added.
Under Makunga's leadership, SANEF is expected to continue its important work in representing journalists and addressing key issues within the media industry, further advancing the goals of press freedom and journalistic integrity in South Africa.
