A quick response from a loco pilot and vigilant locals prevented a possible tragedy when a school bus carrying 40 students was stuck at a railway level crossing in Nagpur. The incident unfolded at 4 pm on Thursday when the bus driver failed to heed the red signal at the Khaperkheda crossing, triggering panic as automatic gates closed around the bus.
A passenger train en route from Chhindwara, MP, to Itwari, Nagpur, was approaching, prompting locals to hurry onto the tracks, signaling the train to stop. The gatekeeper also alerted railway officials using a walkie-talkie. Noticing the commotion on the tracks, the loco pilot applied the brakes, stopping the train before the crossing.
Within ten minutes, the tracks were cleared, and the school bus crossed safely. Khaparkheda police station in-charge Dhanaji Zalak confirmed the bus driver's fault in ignoring the red signal and driving parallel to the tracks.
