Steady Pound Amid Financial Uncertainty: BoE Decision Looms
The pound held steady against the dollar as investors awaited the Bank of England's interest rate decision. The euro gained against the pound due to positive euro zone economic data. British finance minister Rachel Reeves announced spending cuts, causing concern over the UK’s growth outlook.
The pound remained steady against the dollar on Tuesday as investors awaited the Bank of England's (BoE) upcoming interest rate decision. Sterling traded down slightly at $1.2854, following a near three-week low against the dollar.
The euro saw a 0.17% rise against the pound, bolstered by data indicating stronger-than-expected growth in the euro zone's economy for Q2. Traders estimate a 60% probability that the BoE will cut interest rates by 25 basis points to 5.0% on August 1, and anticipate 52 basis points of cuts by year-end.
Amid mounting uncertainty, investors expressed caution in trading sterling ahead of the BoE decision. Jane Foley, head of FX strategy at Rabobank, noted that the market is leaning toward the expectation of a rate cut. Meanwhile, UK shop prices rose at the joint-slowest rate since October 2021, while services price inflation concerned BoE policymakers most.
