Telecom giant Reliance Jio has installed a second dedicated tower in Wayanad, Kerala, to enhance network connectivity amid devastating landslides. The move comes following a request from the State Disaster Management Authority and aims to expand network capacity and coverage in affected areas, assisting distressed residents, rescue workers, and disaster management teams on the ground.
This significant boost in network capacity will aid rescue efforts, improve coordination at control rooms and relief camps, and help expedite relief operations. Meanwhile, the Indian Army has ramped up its rescue efforts, successfully evacuating multiple individuals to safety. Troops from the Army's Madras Sappers have constructed an improvised 100-foot bridge at Choorlamalai, which has been opened for public use.
Major General VT Mathew, General Officer Commanding, Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area, stated that the bridge construction would allow the army to bring heavy equipment to the rescue site. "Almost all those needing help were rescued; now we need to search houses for trapped individuals. The bridge lets us bring in heavy equipment to assist in these efforts," he added. The operations continue non-stop with over 500 Army personnel involved.
Mathew further reported that over 100 bodies have been recovered. The death toll has risen to 167, with many still injured, marooned, or missing. The Kerala Revenue Department has identified 96 victims and conducted post-mortems on numerous bodies. The Prime Minister's Office has announced compensation for the victims' families and the injured.
