In a recent session of the Rajya Sabha, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw disclosed attempts by some passengers to misuse the emergency quota system using fake authority letters from high dignitaries and railway officials.

Responding to queries from Samajwadi Party MP Javed Ali Khan, Vaishnaw highlighted ongoing checks and instructions to curb such malpractices. Approximately 36% of berths under this quota were utilized in the financial year 2023-24.

According to Vaishnaw, the Railways has established guidelines on allocating the emergency quota, prioritizing requests based on urgency and official status. Measures are also in place to facilitate booking through IRCTC for Members of Parliament.
